Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick

Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick is a world-famous leader in Dermatology. He is also a caring and experienced doctor who wants only the best for his patients. This combination of innovation and experience makes him a wonderful resource for his patients. Dr. Fitzpatrick is known internationally for his innovative work developing medical lasers. He created many well-known laser procedures including laser resurfacing of the skin with the UltraPulse CO2 laser. Dr. Fitzpatrick authored medical textbooks on laser surgery and more than one hundred scientific articles. He lectures all over the world and has trained thousands of physicians in laser techniques. He specializes in fractional laser resurfacing, Neograft hair transplants, dermal fillers and toxins such as Botox and Dysport.

A Princeton University graduate, Dr. Fitzpatrick went on to Emory University Medical School where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society for academic excellence, studied Internal Medicine at the University of Southern California and Dermatology at University of California at Los Angeles. He is double board certified with the American Board of Dermatology and American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Fitzpatrick’s surgical interests led him into the field of laser surgery.

In March 2005, Allure magazine featured him as a “Physician Who Has Most Influenced Beauty,” and was honored by his peers for his  accomplishments in dermatology at the 2004 Sturge-Weber Society’s Physician of the Year event. Dr. Fitzpatrick takes great pleasure in sharing his knowledge with colleagues. In addition to his accomplishments in laser medicine and surgery, he is the founder of a unique line of skin care products to reverse photoaging. He went on to form the company, SkinMedica, a leader in the skin care industry.

Dr. Fitzpatrick is a volunteer Clinical Professor in the Division of Dermatology at UCSD School of Medicine. Dr. Fitzpatrick has played an active role in many professional societies, serving as President of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) in 2000-2001, and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) 2004-2009.

He has received numerous prestigious awards and citations from his peers including the:

• Leon Goldman Memorial Lectureship Award for integrity, dedication, and overall excellence in clinical laser research and service
• Elliot Drake Lectureship Award
• Caroline and William Mark Memorial Award
• Lifetime Achievement Award from the TSLMS
• Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cosmetic
• Laser and Dermatology Society
• Innovator in Dermatology Award from the Cosmetic Surgery Forum

He is also the recipient of the Richard Webster Lectureship Award from the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, for his contributions in cosmetic surgery. The ASLMS has honored Dr. Fitzpatrick with the creation of an annual award bearing his name and given to the best clinical research paper of the year.

Although Dr. Fitzpatrick lectures around the world and is respected by his peers as one of the foremost leaders in laser surgery, he finds his greatest pleasure when he is working one on one with his patients. Dr. Fitzpatrick’s patients come to him from the San Diego area and from around the world. They want to take advantage of the opportunity to receive medical care from such an internationally distinguished scientist and doctor.

On a personal level, Dr. Fitzpatrick is loved by his staff and admired by his colleagues. He is a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Dr. Fitzpatrick is the proud father of five children and two grandchildren. Along with his wife Betsy, he finds the best times are those spent just being with his family.
