Liposuction and Liposculpture with tumescent, both involve the removal of localized fat deposits as a means of contouring the body. Both Dr. Goldman and Dr. Butterwick are nationally renowned experts in the field of liposuction, using the tumescent liposculpture method in San Diego.  They have both written countless articles for peer-reviewed medical journals, given lectures at national and international medical conferences, as well as contributed chapters to best-selling medical textbooks all on the topic of liposculpture.

What Areas Can Be Treated With Liposuction?

Liposuction, using the tumescent liposculpture method, can be used to treat various problem areas on the body. Generally, it is used to treat the areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction can effectively remove fat and contour the following areas (basically almost anywhere!):

  • Love handles
  • Hips
  • Thighs – inner thights, outer thights (saddle bags), anterior thighs (front of thigh)
  • Buttocks
  • Abdomen
  • Back (mid and lower)
  • Calves
  • Ankles
  • Male and female breast reduction
  • Knees
  • Neck and jowls
  • Arms

Who is A Good Candidate For Liposuction – Liposcultpure?

Anyone who is in good overall health, with fatty areas on the body that are resistant to diet and exercise is a good candidate for liposuction. Additionally, a good candidate will be between the ages of 16 and up to the mid to late 70’s.  The ultimate decision as to whether or not you are a good candidate will depend on your consultation with our physicians and your expectations for the procedure. It is important to remember that liposculpture is not to be used a form of weight loss, but as a procedure to treat areas of the body that have been resistant to diet and exercise. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis with local anesthetic

Laser Lipolysis Versus Liposculpture

Laser Lipolysis is different from Liposculpture as it:

  • Adds a “skin tightening” element
  • Quicker recovery time
  • Smaller incisions
  • Better for small areas

Often to get the best results we combine laser lipolysis with traditional liposuction or liposculpture.  Learn more about laser lipolysis.

Liposuction Versus Liposculpture

The main difference between the two is the instrument used. The instrument, called a cannula, is much thinner with liposculpture allowing the surgeon to artistically sculpt the body into a new shape using delicate instruments rather than simply sucking the fat out as was the case with the larger cannula and the old way of doing liposuction. The newer less invasive liposculpture is easier on the body, improves results and involves less scarring or incisions.

The small microcannulas don’t leave ridges and waviness caused by larger cannulas.  The result is so smooth and natural there there are no tell tale signs that you’ve had lipo.  Even the small openings needed for the cannula to enter the skin are so small that the resulting scars are the tiniest possible.

Tumescent Liposculpture is the most advanced technique of permanently removing excess fat deposit under skin in areas that are resistant to diet and exercise.  It’s called tumescent liposuction (which means “to swell”) because the surgeon fills and swells the fatty areas that need to be removed with large volumes of a special solution before the procedure.

This solution completely numbs the area due to the effect of local anesthetic; therefore general anesthesia or heavy intravenous sedation is not required.  At the same time a substance called adrenalin constricts the blood vessels, reducing bleeding to negligible amounts. Fatty deposits are then removed using small straw-like tubes (the small cannula) connected to a suction apparatus or syringe.

Tumescent liposuction recovery time is relatively minimal. Within less than a week most patients are able to move around normally and return to work, experiencing only mild discomfort. Within two weeks patients are able to remove compression garments. While the recovery process differs from patient to patient, generally within two weeks most patients can return to their normal activities. However, it takes a few months for the full results of the procedure to be seen.
