Hair Transplant
Our physicians are experts in hair restoration/transplantion in San Diego. You may be a candidate for Hair Transplantion if you have areas of hair loss or balding but still have areas of normal hair growth to provide a source for the grafts. The purpose of this procedure is to obtain hair growth in thin, balding or bald areas.

Hair loss secondary to genetics or “male pattern hair loss” results in visibly thinning hair, temporal recession, and baldness in 40% of men by age 35 and 60-70% by age 65. Because this patterned hair loss requires a form of testosterone to be present, women have a much lower risk (10-15%) prior to menopause, but by age 65 visible thinning of the top of the scalp is visible in 60-70% of women. Facelift and brow lift procedures also complicate this situation for women, causing thinning of the frontal and temporal hairline and alteration of the hairline in front of and behind the ears, limiting hair styling options.
Hair transplantation surgical procedures have been performed since the 1970s and are based on the fact that hair growing on the back of the scalp has different genetic coding than that on the front and top part of the scalp. This allows us to surgically re-position that hair to replace hair loss. Hair naturally grows in small groupings of 2-3 hairs, known as “follicular units.” By using these naturally occurring follicular units for transplantation, a very natural result can be achieved, which is virtually indistinguishable from natural hair growth.
A newly available hair transplantation device in our San Diego office can dramatically improve hair transplant surgery. This FDA-approved device, NeoGraft, automates the surgical removal of individual hair follicles, one at a time, eliminating the need for doctors to surgically remove a strip of skin containing hair from the back of the scalp. This minimally invasive minor surgical procedure allows more rapid healing with no incisions, no sutures, no visible scarring, less pain and less post-operative restrictions.

Hair Transplant FAQ’s
Q: How can I avoid a ‘doll’ hairline?
A: A “doll’s hair” look is avoided by using a variety of factors, not just using a zigzag pattern. The original doll’s hair look occurred due to using large grafts – “plugs” of 12-20 hairs with spaces in between. A second very un-natural look is a “wall of hair” – a very dense hairline, even if zigzag may have an un-natural appearance. Follicular unit grafting helps solve these problems, but even that is not enough. In general, the frontal hairline needs to be done with single hair grafts and how densely it is transplanted will depend on how much hair there is on the frontal scalp – if the frontal scalp is thin, then the hairline needs to be even thinner. Placing random hairs, matching angle and directions of adjacent residual hairs is very important as well. In short, it is an artistic endeavor that deserves the attention of a highly specialized board certified dermatologist in San Diego.
